Let them take you where they will’

 Performances of the works of

Jelaluddin Rumi,

the 13C Gnostic Sufi Master, Poet, and Awakened Heart

Passion, Wisdom, Beauty, and Humour
” What you do is beyond a performance… It burns, caresses, consoles, re-awakens… You are like ember and the other day, I felt like kindling.” -Muriel Maufroy (Author of Rumi’s Daughter)
Version 2
” A story is like the water you heat for your bath.
It takes messages between the fire and your skin, it lets them meet , and it cleans you…
Enjoy this being washed, by a secret you sometimes know, and then, not”

12-Garden - Version 2

An evening in the company of Rumi’s sublime poetry and story.

These events are usually a fairly spontaneous blend of Rumi poems, aspects of his life story, and some of the tales he told. Depending on the moment and the nature of the  particular audience, I will recite and tell stories from translations of Rumi material that I have worked with over many years, with perhaps something new dropped in too – all as a means to allow some of Rumi’s extraordinary  blessing, his heart nourishing wisdom, passion and humour to come through  to us – in the end,  as blessing, as silence, as …. grace.

To perform this material,  to let it come through one’s body and soul, is in itself a priviledge, and an arduous fire, and a blessing.

Gratitude to all the Rumi ‘translators’ who have made this work possible, and Rumi accessible, particularly Coleman Barks, Andrew Harvey, Muriel Maufroy, Daniel Liebert, Tim Freke; and to my friend and colleague Ashley Ramsden, for his company in beginning the Rumi work with me.

Below are some comments to encourage you the reader, to perhaps invite, or organise, a performance! (see ‘reviews’ section for more):

“If you ever want to be reminded what it is to live and to love and you hear of this man performing this poetry – run there! ” Isabel Losada, Author of ‘For Tibet, With Love’ And ‘The Battersea Park Road to Enlightenment’

“..It’s easy to think that Rumi is a great poet, a remarkable person, an enlightened master, and all that – I now understand that the voice coming through Rumi, and who he really is and became, is The Friend.  This means taking his poetry very seriously, and also even more joyfully of course.  Thank you so much.”  -Mark

” What you do is beyond a performance. You re-plug us to the current.     What you are doing is alive. It burns, caresses, consoles, re-awakens… You are like ember and the other day, I felt like kindling.”           -Muriel Maufroy (Author of Rumi’s Daughter)

“Last saturday night was sheer wonder, and what was alive and present was the Love, the Beauty, the Passion, the Knowledge, the Majesty which is Rumi, and you were a true instrument.”    – a personal response from Frances Ryan, Beshara School of Intensive Esoteric Education, Chisholme House, Scotland

“The combination of the skills of a master storyteller and the insight of a visionary poet is an all too rare event. An evening of Duncan Mackintosh’s exhilarating interpretation of Rumi’s poetry was such an occasion.” – Anthea Robertson, Aberdeen, Scotland

“A gem in the festival. A refreshing treat…This is indeed food for the soul….Duncan brings the spirit of Rumi to life – his eyes blaze with an intensity which leave one believing that Rumi is here in the room with us…Profound vision and wit.. Rumi is the bread we all need to eat !” –       review , Edinburgh  Festival 1999

“Dear Duncan, what a gorgeous, delicious, nutritious feast of an evening you created for us on Sunday. Your generous embracing courageous skilful presence led us on such a journey and held us lightly and lovingly along the way…….More more more pleeeease!…… We need it more than food and drink – I just slurped it up – thank you so much…..Loads of love mx”

“… To experience this beauty live and to witness Duncan’s animated and engaging delivery in such an intimate environment turned out to be an inspiring and laughter inducing event. I confess that even as a poet myself, and a student of the English language, there once existed in my mind a doubtful, critical voice, that in its darkest day, would see a “poetry evening” billed and would read instead, “boring, self-satisfying and watery endurance contest.” Perhaps you have been there yourself. But if any trace of this scepticism about the power of poetry still existed in the dim recesses of my consciousness, it ceased to exist this night. I listened as truth, ageless and timeless, in deep and booming tones, found me, and more than once brought tears of joy to my eyes.”  – Dyan Alfie

“These teachings are milk from the nipple of the soul.
They wont flow well unless you suck!
The garden of the heart is moist and fresh,
with jasmin,roses,and cypress trees
My words carry their aroma
Follow the scent to Eden”
